There's an ever-present danger lurking in the daily grind of self-employment: procrastination. This widespread phenomenon of putting off tasks can have devastating effects. Even though we are aware that procrastination brings negative consequences, stress, guilt and loss of productivity are often the unpleasant reality.

Fortunately, there are proven methods that can help us escape this trap. One technique particularly worth highlighting is the Pomodoro Technique, developed in the late 1980s by the resourceful Francesco Cirillo. Inspired by a tomato-shaped kitchen timer - "pomodoro" in Italian - he designed a system that divides work into focused intervals.

Here's how it works:

  1. Identify task: To begin, select the task you want to work on.
  2. Set timer: Set the pomodoro timer to 25 minutes. During this time, you should be fully focused on the selected task.
  3. Focused work: Devote yourself to your task until the timer stops you. Does a distraction come to mind? Note it briefly, but return to your main task immediately.
  4. Break time: Once the timer alerts you, take a short break of about five minutes. Use this time to take a breath, enjoy a coffee, or just let your mind wander.Replenish energy reserves: After four such Pomodoro intervals, give yourself a longer break of 15-30 minutes. This phase is crucial to recharge your energy reserves and sharpen your concentration.

The Pomodoro technique not only provides a remedy for the dreaded procrastination, but also helps you find a harmonious balance between intense work and soothing relaxation. Especially for sole proprietors, it is a valuable tool to increase productivity and optimize the daily work routine. Try it out and experience for yourself how the Pomodoro technique can transform your work.

By the way: We have also integrated this practical timer into Leadtime so that you can keep an even better eye on your tasks and concentrate optimally on your projects. Try it out and increase your efficiency with Leadtime's Pomodoro timer!
